HANNAH ESTRIN

My primary body of oil paintings uses the nocturnal landscape as a setting to explore themes of alienation, the uncanny, and technological alterations to nature. I depict dark, desolate settings: empty roads, shadowy forests, and other places you might see alone at night. Artificial light sources call attention to the fact that these places are manmade, but now sit abandoned.

My interest in the nocturne is directed by a lifelong visual impairment which affects my sight in low light conditions, and I aim to provoke a similar feeling of estrangement and uncertainty in the viewer through a reframing of the familiar. I work on small wood panels, using the natural grain of the substrate as a backdrop for complex shadows. My markmaking intentionally emulates both visual snow and digital noise, connecting my eyesight with that of the camera lens.
